Penetration of Indonesian Tropical Fruits into China
The Covid-19 pandemic has not hindered the Ministry of Trade's steps to accelerate the penetration of potential dragon fruit products into the Chinese market. In order to explore opportunities for dragon fruit trade cooperation, the Ministry of Trade held an exploration of a virtual trade agreement entitled the First Indonesia-China Dragon Fruits Online Business Matching 2020 on Thursday (6/8).
At the event, the Ministry of Trade collaborated with the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Finance. Minister of Trade Agus Suparmanto greatly appreciated the synergy between state institutions and ministries which is very important to be applied, especially in the current conditions.
"Recovering the economy and increasing exports, especially during the current pandemic, is a big task, so the synergy of various parties is absolutely necessary.
The strategy of each agency / ministry will contribute to delivering Indonesia's potential products to be marketed abroad, ”said Trade Minister Agus.
Meanwhile, the Director General of National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade of Kasan, who opened the activity, said that this program was a quick step for the government to respond to the opening of access for Indonesian tropical fruit products to China.
"Dragon fruit is one of the products that can be relied on to enter the global market because it is easily accepted in almost all parts of the world. However, accelerated efforts are needed in realizing the first export of Indonesian dragon fruit to China.
For this reason, once China opens market access, we must immediately be responsive in encouraging its exports. Hopefully this business matching activity will produce positive results, "said Kasan.
This virtual business matching will be attended by five Indonesian dragon fruit exporters who have registered in China, six exporters who will be registered, and other companies. They met with 26 importer members of the China Agricultural Wholesale Markets Association (CAWA).
In front of CAWA member importers, Indonesian exporters and companies explained the advantages of Indonesian dragon fruit such as sweet taste, long durability, and different harvest periods from China.
This virtual activity resulted in the potential for the signing of an understanding between 3 exporters and importers, which would be followed up further with communication between the two parties.
Kasan stated, with the acceptance of Indonesian dragon fruit in the Chinese market, it will increase the line of Indonesian tropical fruit products that have already entered the Chinese market, such as salak, mangosteen, longan, and banana.
“The Indonesian government hopes that in the future there will be more Indonesian tropical fruits that can enter the Chinese market, such as pineapples and durians. It is hoped that the performance of Indonesia's exports to China will continue to be supported positively, "said Kasan.
Based on BPS data, exports of Indonesian non-oil and gas products to China during the January-June 2020 period were recorded at USD 12.82 billion, an increase of 11.9 percent compared to the January-June 2019 period which amounted to USD 11.46 billion.
Meanwhile, world demand for dragon fruit during the 2015--2019 period grew positively by 7.51 percent, from USD 2.84 billion in 2015 to USD 3.67 billion in 2019.
The export of Indonesian dragon fruit products to the world continues to increase every year with a positive trend of 12.91 percent in the last five years from USD 145 thousand in 2015 to USD 208 thousand in 2019.
The increasing consumption of dragon fruit in the world is partly due to the fact that many Asian communities and the Indonesian and Chinese diaspora around the world consistently consume food and foodstuffs from their respective countries, as well as promote these culinary delights and food to local communities in each country.
Kasan also revealed the importance of Indonesia's economic recovery during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Kasan, economic activity recovery can be carried out by utilizing the potential of each trading partner by forging closer cooperation, one of which is the bilateral trade between Indonesia and China.
Moreover, now is the momentum to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. "The spread of Covid-19 has an impact in the form of a slowdown in global trade activity. Indonesia and China realize that they need to take the right steps to ward off the economic slowdown, one of which is through trade cooperation, "said Kasan.
Kasan also emphasized the importance of maintaining optimism amid the conditions of international trade which were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This is so that Indonesia can continue to seek new cooperation opportunities with various trading partners in the world.
